Parent teacher conferences are one of the most useful tools you have a parent to engage in conversation about your child’s learning. It is an opportune time to not only give you peace of mind about your child’s development but to acquire pertinent information about the teacher, their style and the educational environment.

Top 4 Tips for Maximizing Your Parent Teacher Time

1. Do not ask generic questions like, how is my child doing? You need to ask specific and directed questions during the interview.
2. Before the meeting, prepare by pinpointing any concerns you may already have. This could range from behavioural or social development issues, peer relationships, classroom behaviour, motivations and work habits to strengths and challenges.
3. Spend a bit of time getting to know the teacher. Understand their expectations and teaching style.
4. Keep the conversation going even after the conference ends. If a concern or challenge has been brought to light, be accountable as a parent but also hold the teacher accountable too. Don’t stop asking questions!
